'BREATHE, WOMAN!' (2015)
CHOREOGRAPHER’S NOTE
The notion of multicultural femininity remains an evolving process of contest and exploration for me. This project in particular, brought together a group of 15 culturally diverse women that have been at some point, faced with the overwhelming sense of gender displacement in a new society. In this 4-week process, we addressed the issues of migration that is triggered by place, language and time.
Through each personal story, we strive to capture the essence of simplicity and ‘everyday-ness’ in basic human gestures that illustrate who we are as women today. Along with the sounds of migrant women sharing their experiences, we sought to find our common ground and essentially, what makes us. Through this feminine leadership, it has become a healing process for many – not just in coming to terms with our past but also a reflection that has transformed this project into a celebration of our beings.
